Leather caps and hats, rugged, good-looking and weather-proof, are perfect chapeaux for fall and winter wear. Try on some leather newboys from Scala for yourself, like The Antonio, a patch cap, or The Angus (in rich, substantial suede leather we call "wolverine") or maybe The Justin, a classic eight-panel cap. Grab a Wigens cold weather ball cap for your head while you're at it. The Knut in creamy elk leather is a good bet, and so is the rugged Bjorn with its plush sheepskin lining, or maybe even The Baltic (with its fleece lined earflaps). See what I mean? Talk about warm and comfy! Scala's USA-made Colby, an all-leather ivy cap, features an elasticized sweatband for an added level of comfort. But it's the Quilcene you'll want for a soft-as-cashmere lambskin ivy cap. This is one very fine lid with a contrast, sewn-down brim and tab at back to snug it up, as is The Sven from Wigens (stand-out in Rust or Green), and The Gustav, warmly lined and made from unblemished shearling lambskin. Mr. Sam Saba (of the Great White North) also offers ivy caps made from only the best Nappa leather and fashioned with fleece-lined drop-down earflaps. Too comfortable for words, really.

Scala loves leathers too: all buttery in red Nappa leather with the Emily newsboy; then pure wolverine suede in hickory or antelope with the Angus (who's unisex, by the way). Stacy Adams offers a very tasteful leather ball cap and you'll definitely kick yourself (or me) if you don't get your hands on the Carmine Suede Ivy in light mustard, from the Italian maestro, Borsalino.

One of my forever-favorites is The Stacy Adams Monroe Baseball Cap -- a stylish, go-anywhere cap in black -- and I think The Norberg walking hat will be a new Number One for those of you who love bucket hats. A Wigens creation, The Norberg is soft and supple in elk leather and has dropdown earflaps for when the wind blows. It's certainly possible that The Brad from Scala, a lambskin walking hat with self band and side vent holes, or perhaps The Donovan, an extremely handsome antiqued leather safari, might move up into top spot -- tough decision here. No man's hat collection is complete, though, without at least one version of the Greek Fisherman's hat, fabricated from genuine lambskin, and a Sam Saba Aviator cap, rugged in shearling (like those worn on the B3 missions over Europe in WWII).
It's hard to go wrong with leather hats and caps. And if you do happen to veer off course, at least you'll look smoking in your skin!
